Uvalde City Council Declines Further Investigation into Robb Elementary Shooting

The Uvalde City Council in Texas has opted against pursuing another investigation into the Robb Elementary School shooting that occurred in May 2022 and claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers. This decision was made following a third-party investigation that cleared the police officers present that day of any misconduct.

Mayor Pro-Tem Everardo Zamora announced the news towards the end of Tuesday night’s council meeting, acknowledging that the community was not adequately protected during the shooting. Zamora pointed to outdated police department policies, insufficient training, and a lack of proper equipment as contributing factors.

Reggie Daniels, who lost his 10-year-old son Uziyah in the shooting, expressed his disappointment in a TikTok video posted on Tuesday. He criticized the city for failing to hold the officers accountable and for continuing to disregard the victims’ families.

During the meeting, Zamora stated that the Uvalde Police Department is conducting a comprehensive review of its personnel, policies, procedures, training, and equipment to ensure optimal performance. He also mentioned that Chief Homer Delgado will oversee necessary changes and improvements to guarantee the safety of the community. The department’s recently announced ‘Guardian Initiative’ includes a thorough review of past actions, individual interviews with all officers, and the implementation of rigorous new training standards and expanded professional development programs.

The City Council has yet to formally accept the third-party investigation report, a fact highlighted by Brett Cross, whose son was also killed in the shooting. Cross expressed his frustration and anger at the city’s handling of the situation, accusing the officers and city officials of failing to protect the children and continuing to inflict pain on the victims’ families.
