Shami’s Return to Cricket: Bengal’s Ranji Trophy, New Zealand Tests, and the Australian Tour

Mohammed Shami, the veteran Indian fast bowler, is on the verge of returning to competitive cricket. After undergoing ankle surgery in February, he has been diligently rehabilitating and is now primed for a comeback.

His first appearance is expected to be for his domestic side, Bengal, in the Ranji Trophy. Shami is likely to feature in either or both of Bengal’s opening Ranji matches, scheduled for October 11 against UP and October 18 against Bihar. Despite the short gap between the games, the focus is on ensuring Shami is fully prepared for the upcoming New Zealand Test series, which commences on October 19 in Bengaluru.

It’s highly anticipated that Shami will feature in one or more of the three Test matches against New Zealand, playing a crucial role before the crucial tour of Australia. The Australian tour is a priority, and selectors want to ensure that India’s top three pacers, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj, are all fit and ready for the five-Test series.

Shami’s last competitive appearance was in the ODI World Cup final against Australia in November 2022. Since then, he has been undergoing his rehabilitation process at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, gradually increasing his intensity. While initial plans included a potential return during the Duleep Trophy, it was determined that it was too early for him to participate.

Shami’s return is a welcome boost for the Indian team. With 229 wickets from 64 Tests, including six five-wicket hauls and 12 four-wicket hauls, he remains a formidable force in the bowling attack. His experience and ability to take wickets will be vital for India’s success in the upcoming challenges.
