Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for the 2024 US Presidential election, gave her first formal interview on Friday (India time). In a conversation with CNN’s Dana Bash, Harris seized the opportunity to criticize Republican nominee Donald Trump, highlighting her unwavering commitment to her values. She also addressed criticisms on key issues like fracking and immigration.
Harris expressed pride in the Biden administration’s accomplishments, particularly in bringing inflation down to less than 3% and capping the cost of insulin for seniors at $35 a month. She also took aim at Trump, accusing him of failing to deliver on his promises, such as allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices. “We did it,” she declared, emphasizing the Biden administration’s success in this area.
Harris went on to accuse Trump of dividing the nation and promoting an environment that diminishes the character and strength of Americans. She asserted that America is ready to turn a page on the Trump era.
On the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, Harris advocated for a two-state solution while reiterating her unwavering commitment to Israel’s defense and its right to defend itself. She also addressed Trump’s false suggestion that she had “turned Black” for political purposes, dismissing it as “the same old tired playbook.”
Harris emphasized her intention to act as President for “all Americans.” In this spirit, she stated that she would nominate a Republican to her Cabinet if elected, highlighting the potential benefit of having a diverse and inclusive administration.
When questioned about the Biden administration’s response to the border issue, Harris criticized Trump for derailing a bipartisan deal in early 2024. She then provided a detailed explanation of her evolving positions on issues like fracking and immigration, emphasizing that her core values have remained consistent.
Harris acknowledged the ongoing economic challenges, including high inflation and rising grocery prices, but pointed to the administration’s efforts in addressing these issues. Looking ahead, she outlined her plan for an “opportunity economy” and pledged to implement policies to support and strengthen the middle class on her first day in office if elected.
