Hitachi Rail Unveils Enhanced ETR1000 Train at InnoTrans 2024

At the prestigious InnoTrans global rail exhibition in Berlin, Hitachi Rail made a significant announcement: the unveiling of the latest iteration of its highly successful ETR1000 train. Developed in collaboration with Trenitalia, the ETR1000 has already made a substantial impact on European transportation, with 78 trains currently in operation and an additional 48 on order. Collectively, these trains have covered a staggering nearly 200 million kilometers across Italy, France, and Spain.

The upgraded ETR1000 boasts an array of improvements. Notably, it features a more efficient traction motor and redesigned power units, contributing to enhanced energy efficiency. The train’s bogie structure has also been revamped, and it now includes a comprehensive Train Control and Monitoring System, fully developed under Hitachi Rail’s expertise.

To further enhance its technological capabilities, Hitachi Rail has integrated its cutting-edge HMAX suite into the train’s system. This comprehensive digital asset management platform leverages artificial intelligence to analyze data from onboard sensors, enabling more accurate predictions and optimizations of train operations.

Beyond its technological advancements, the ETR1000 also features a refreshed aesthetic. Externally, it sports a new livery, while internally it showcases a redesigned layout. The Executive Class has been enhanced with additional seats and increased luggage capacity, ensuring a comfortable and convenient experience for passengers. Further enhancements include superior Wi-Fi connectivity, a revitalized catering service in the bistro, and a contemporary interior design featuring new colors and seating options.

Looking to the future, Hitachi Rail is exploring designs for the ETR1000 that can operate under more extreme weather conditions, such as high temperatures and monsoons. The company is adapting its systems to withstand challenges like dust and sand, ensuring the train’s adaptability across a wider range of geographic locations.

Giuseppe Marino, CEO of Hitachi Rail, expressed his pride in unveiling the evolution of the ETR1000: “We are proud to unveil the evolution of our ETR1000 train. Over the past nine years our high-speed technology has transformed how passengers travel in Italy, and more recently in France and Spain, achieving almost 200 million km of service – the equivalent of a staggering 5,000 journeys around the world.”

The ETR1000 has played a pivotal role in advancing the decarbonization of the transport sector in its operating regions. By encouraging a shift from cars and planes to more sustainable rail transport, the train significantly contributes to reducing carbon emissions. Additionally, over 97.1% of the ETR1000’s materials are recyclable, underscoring its sustainability at the end of its lifecycle.

As the demand for high-speed rail continues to grow, the expansion of this technology is crucial for meeting both European and global decarbonization goals. The ETR1000 stands as a testament to Hitachi Rail’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, providing a compelling solution for the future of transportation.
