SHINE Technologies Receives DOE Grant, Appoints CRO to Accelerate Nuclear Waste Recycling and Commercial Growth

SHINE Technologies, a pioneer in next-generation fusion energy, is making significant strides towards its ambitious goals. The company has secured a new grant from the Department of Energy (DOE) to further its groundbreaking work in nuclear waste recycling. This grant will fuel SHINE’s Phase 3 program, which focuses on developing cost-effective methods for capturing and safely disposing of Xenon and Krypton, two gaseous byproducts of nuclear fuel processing.

The DOE’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program is designed to bridge the gap between laboratory discoveries and real-world applications. SHINE’s innovative approach to nuclear waste management is a testament to the program’s success in translating scientific breakthroughs into practical solutions.

The United States faces a growing challenge with an estimated 86,000 metric tons of nuclear waste, a figure that increases by 2,000 tons annually. Globally, the amount of nuclear waste produced is three times higher and continues to rise. SHINE’s commitment to recycling and reusing nuclear fuel is an environmentally sustainable approach that aims to address this challenge head-on, mitigating one of the primary obstacles to the widespread adoption of nuclear energy.

SHINE’s mission is to repurpose used nuclear fuel, which still retains over 90% of its energy capacity. The DOE grant will empower the company to advance its Phase 3 program, bringing us closer to a future where nuclear fuel recycling is a viable solution for the U.S. energy landscape.

“We are deeply grateful for the DOE’s continued support,” said Ross Radel, CTO at SHINE. “This grant is a pivotal step in enhancing our understanding of off-gas capture and de-risking the process, ultimately bringing us closer to making nuclear fuel recycling a reality.”

In another significant development, SHINE has appointed Todd Caccamo as Chief Revenue Officer (CRO). Caccamo brings over two decades of experience in the defense, medical, and energy sectors, having held leadership roles at Materion Corporation and GE Aviation, where he successfully scaled sales organizations and drove market expansion. His expertise will be invaluable as SHINE expands its presence in imaging, FLARE, and radiopharmaceuticals markets.

Caccamo’s focus will be on streamlining existing processes, driving growth in SHINE’s various business lines. “I am incredibly passionate about SHINE’s mission to make nuclear fusion a reality,” said Todd Caccamo, SHINE Technologies’ CRO. “My experience in the Marines instilled in me the importance of teamwork and servant leadership. I am committed to leveraging these principles to create exponential growth for SHINE and help the company create a safer, healthier, and cleaner world.”

Greg Piefer, CEO and founder of SHINE, remarked, “Todd joins SHINE at a crucial juncture as we scale multiple product lines across a broad spectrum of customers. His expertise in scaling sales organizations, particularly in deploying people, processes, and systems, is a perfect fit as we transition from a development-stage company to a growth-stage enterprise.”

Headquartered in Janesville, Wisconsin, SHINE Technologies is a leading innovator in next-generation fusion. The company’s commitment to safety, cost-efficiency, and environmental responsibility is reflected in its innovative fusion and fusion-based technology. SHINE is at the forefront of medical isotope production, developing non-carrier-added lutetium-177, a critical component in cutting-edge medical treatments. The company’s forward-looking vision encompasses the development of molybdenum-99, a diagnostic tool used in procedures for detecting heart disease and cancer.

SHINE’s dedication to innovation extends beyond the boundaries of industry and healthcare. By leveraging its expertise in fusion technology, the company is actively addressing one of energy’s most complex challenges: nuclear waste recycling. SHINE’s comprehensive and visionary approach is driving advancements across multiple sectors, leaving a lasting impact on technology, healthcare, and sustainable energy solutions.
