Reports suggested that the Public Works Department had deemed the C block stands as ‘unfit’ and ‘dangerous’, leading to speculation about potential structural issues. However, the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) quickly addressed these concerns, assuring fans of their absolute safety and security. Dr. Sanjay Kapoor, the venue director of the UPCA, clarified that while a slight reduction in the capacity of the C block balcony had been implemented, this was a precautionary measure based on advice from experts and engineers. The UPCA has reduced the capacity of the balcony from 10,000 to 7,200 seats, ensuring a safe and comfortable experience for all attendees.
Kapoor emphasized that the UPCA had consulted with the PWD and experts from Kanpur’s Harcourt Butler Technical University to address any potential issues. They have taken all necessary steps to ensure the structural integrity of the stands and have implemented safety measures to guarantee a safe and enjoyable experience for spectators.
Despite the reduction in the C block capacity, the overall seating capacity for the match has been increased to 26,007, providing ample space for fans to enjoy the game. This is a significant increase from the previous match, demonstrating the UPCA’s commitment to providing a comfortable and safe environment for all.
The Green Park Stadium, built in 1945, has a rich history of hosting international cricket matches, having hosted 23 Test matches and 15 ODIs since 1952. While the stadium initially had a capacity of 32,000, the addition of new pavilions and VIP boxes led to the reduction of some seating.
The UPCA has also gone above and beyond to create a memorable experience for fans, extending invitations to families of local heroes who have sacrificed their lives in service to the city. The association plans to plant saplings in their memory as a tribute to their bravery. Additionally, 3,000 school children from Kanpur will be invited to attend the match over the next five days, allowing them to experience the excitement of international cricket firsthand.
