Airtel Revises Prepaid Voice and SMS-Only Plan Prices After Regulatory Scrutiny
In a recent development, Airtel has adjusted the pricing of its voice and SMS-only prepaid plans just days after introducing new options. This move comes after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) announced it would review the newly launched plans. Airtel had previously updated its existing special tariff vouchers (STVs) to comply with TRAI’s guidelines.
The initial plans, launched earlier this week, included a Rs. 499 STV offering unlimited voice calls, 900 free SMS, and 84 days of validity. Another option was a Rs. 1,959 plan with a 365-day validity, providing unlimited voice calls and 3,600 SMS. These plans were temporarily available on Airtel’s website but have since been removed.
Updated Plans Offer Lower Prices for Same Benefits
Airtel has now introduced revised STVs with lower prices. The Rs. 499 plan is now available for Rs. 469, while the Rs. 1,959 plan is now priced at Rs. 1,849. Notably, the benefits remain the same as the previous STVs, meaning users get the same value for a reduced price.
TRAI’s Involvement and Airtel’s Response
Although Airtel hasn’t officially stated the reason behind the price revision, it coincides with TRAI’s announcement to examine the new vouchers offered by Airtel and Jio. TRAI’s statement, which has since been removed from social media, indicated concerns about the new voice and SMS-only packs. The regulatory body emphasized its role in reviewing these plans to ensure compliance with existing rules. This scrutiny seems to have prompted Airtel’s price adjustments.
Alternative Plans with Data Allowance
For subscribers seeking data alongside voice and SMS benefits, Airtel continues to offer other options. The Rs. 548 plan provides 7GB of data with 84 days validity, while the annual plan priced at Rs. 2,249 includes 30GB of data.
Airtel’s quick response to TRAI’s scrutiny demonstrates the telecom operator’s commitment to regulatory compliance. The revised pricing offers more affordable options for users looking for basic voice and SMS services. This latest update reflects the dynamic nature of the telecom market in India, where regulatory oversight and competitive pricing play key roles.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation as TRAI continues its examination and Airtel responds to market demands.
