Anti-Israel Protests Expected at Democratic National Convention in Chicago

The Democratic National Convention is set to begin in Chicago this week, with thousands of people expected to attend, including a significant number of protesters. Among the anticipated demonstrations are large-scale rallies organized by anti-Israel groups. These groups are calling for the United States to cut off aid to Israel and end the ongoing war in Gaza.

Hatem Abudayyeh, chair of the U.S. Palestinian Community Network, expressed the group’s stance to the Washington Post, stating, “We feel that [the Biden administration] is responsible for this ongoing war and genocide.” He further emphasized that their target is the Democratic Party’s leadership, including Vice President Kamala Harris, whom they refer to as “Killer Kamala.”

In contrast, the Israeli American Council plans to hold a rally in support of Israel on Wednesday. Aya Shechter, chief programming officer, told the Chicago Tribune that their message is clear: “We stand with Israel.” The group also aims to bring attention to those who remain held hostage by Hamas.

With tens of thousands of people anticipated in Chicago during the DNC, Mayor Brandon Johnson assured protesters of their First Amendment rights, stating, “They don’t have to be concerned about their First Amendment right. I’m going to make sure that these individuals have everything that they need to make sure that their voices are heard.”

While acknowledging the right to protest, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling vowed that authorities would intervene if protests become disruptive. “We will not allow people to come here and destroy the city,” Snelling stated earlier this week.

Alongside the anti-Israel and pro-Israel rallies, other demonstrations are planned throughout the week, some without the necessary permits. These protests are expected to address various issues, including abortion rights and economic injustices. The city has sanctioned at least seven large demonstrations, reflecting the diverse range of concerns being voiced at the DNC.
