Bad Paneer Found in Ahmedabad
In a recent [[news]] update, the Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) raided Dwarkesh Dairy Products in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on February 4, 2025. They found 1,500 kilos of paneer and the things used to make it, all bad. A secret tip-off led the FDCA’s special team from Gandhinagar to the dairy.
What was wrong with the paneer?
The officials found [[bad things]] mixed in the paneer, like palm oil and a chemical called acetic acid, not meant for food. They took three samples for testing. The rest of the paneer, worth Rs 3.15 lakh, was taken away to keep people safe.
Government Promises Safe Food
The FDCA said the government wants to make sure everyone in Gujarat gets safe and [[healthy food]]. They promised to punish anyone making or selling bad food.
Food Safety Issues in Gujarat
Between April and September 2024, 8.3 per cent of food samples tested in Gujarat (360 out of 4,316) were not safe. In the last three years (2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24), 824, 978, and 910 food samples failed quality checks. In October 2024, a 15-day special drive found 233 tonnes of possibly bad food across Gujarat. Earlier, in April 2024, over 60,000 kg of [[bad spices]] (like chilli powder, turmeric, and coriander) were taken off the market.
Not Enough Action Against Bad Food Sellers
Even though the government is checking food, not many people who sell bad food get punished. Out of 41,509 samples checked in three years, only 4,506 civil cases and 168 criminal cases were filed. This means only 11.2 per cent faced action.
Lead Found in Plates and Bowls
A study found that many plates and bowls in Gujarat have [[lead]], which is dangerous. 95% of metal ones and 77% of ceramic ones had too much lead. But toys, makeup, plastic food containers, spices, and dry foods were mostly okay.
Food Safety Checks Across Telangana
In other [[news]], Telangana has been checking lots of places that make and sell food, like restaurants, bakeries, and online food makers.
This is a reminder to be careful about the food we eat. The government is trying to make food safer for everyone.
