Batik Air Launches New Route Connecting Kunming and Penang, Boosting China-Malaysia Tourism

Batik Air has taken a significant step towards strengthening tourism ties between China and Malaysia with the introduction of a new weekly flight route connecting Kunming and Penang. This strategic move, which commenced on September 24th, aims to improve connectivity between the two countries and capitalize on the burgeoning tourism market from China’s second-tier cities.

The new route, operated by a Boeing 737-8 aircraft with a capacity of 189 passengers, offers a convenient and direct connection between Kunming and Penang. This will facilitate travel for tourists from China, allowing them to explore Malaysia’s diverse attractions, ranging from stunning natural landscapes to rich cultural heritage and delectable cuisine.

Malaysia has witnessed a remarkable surge in Chinese tourist arrivals, with 1,449,711 visitors recorded from January to June 2024, representing a staggering 190.8% increase compared to the same period in 2023. The introduction of visa-free entry for Chinese travelers has further fueled interest in Malaysia as a travel destination.

Yeoh Soon Hin, Deputy Chairman of Tourism Malaysia, expressed great enthusiasm for the new route and its potential to attract even more Chinese tourists to Malaysia. He highlighted the country’s diverse offerings, emphasizing its ability to cater to a wide range of traveler interests.

Batik Air’s new flight route from Kunming to Penang is a testament to the growing importance of tourism in both China and Malaysia.
