Steven Bergwijn has launched a scathing attack on Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman, accusing him of disrespect after being ruled out of the national team following his move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad.
The 26-year-old forward, who joined Al-Ittihad on Monday, was publicly criticized by Koeman, who claimed Bergwijn lacked “sporting ambition” in making the transfer. This comment, made during a press conference, was met with strong disapproval from Bergwijn, who stated he felt hurt and betrayed.
“You don’t treat players like that,” Bergwijn told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. “I have always considered it an honour to play for the Dutch team, but under this coach I no longer want that. I am done with someone who deliberately portrays me like this in the media.”
Bergwijn expressed disappointment that Koeman did not reach out to him directly before publicly making these comments. He emphasized that he will not play under Koeman again, despite his previous contributions to the team, including starting roles in the last 16 and quarterfinals of Euro 2024, as well as the 2022 World Cup quarterfinal against Argentina.
The Netherlands are scheduled to play Nations League matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday and Germany on Tuesday. Bergwijn’s absence leaves a significant gap in the squad, particularly as the team prepares for these crucial matches.
