BJP Demands Justice for Doctor’s Murder, Accuses Mamata Banerjee of Diverting Attention

Political tensions escalated in West Bengal as the BJP intensified its criticism of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the handling of the tragic rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the RG Kar Hospital. The incident, which occurred on August 9th, sparked widespread protests across the state for over three weeks.

The BJP leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari and Sukanta Majumdar, expressed their dissatisfaction with Banerjee’s response to the incident. They accused her of attempting to deflect attention from the core issue by proposing a special session of the state legislature to pass an anti-rape bill.

“She is trying to divert the issue,” Adhikari asserted. “We want justice for the RG Kar incident. You will bring the bill by the 3rd… There is a process in this. Even if the bill is implemented, it will come into effect later only… We want justice for our doctor sister. We want death penalty…”

Majumdar, the Union Minister and BJP state president, met with the West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose, urging him to intervene in the situation. During the meeting, which was also attended by former state party president Dilip Ghosh, Majumdar emphasized the need for decisive action to address the unrest. He condemned Banerjee’s alleged incitement of unrest through her statements and accused her of failing in her duty as the head of the state government.

“We have requested the Governor to protect the rights of people in Bengal and take whatever measures are necessary to lift the state out of this dire situation,” Majumdar stated.

The BJP leaders provided the Governor with detailed information regarding the escalating situation since the doctor’s murder. They urged the Governor, as the constitutional authority, to address these issues.

Several BJP leaders, including Adhikari, have called for Banerjee’s resignation in the wake of the incident.
