Bobby Garcia, founder of Atlantis Productions in Manila, one of Asia’s most successful theater companies, is now based in Vancouver, having moved to Canada at the start of the pandemic. Though he’s cautious about self-identifying as an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW), he acknowledges the sacrifices and hardships they endure, emphasizing their role as everyday heroes. He identifies instead as a Filipino immigrant navigating the challenges of finding work, facing microaggressions, and experiencing overt racism.
This shared experience of isolation and loneliness, common to many immigrants, is at the heart of Garcia’s upcoming production, ‘Request sa Radyo.’ The play, starring alternating leads Lea Salonga and Dolly de Leon, explores these themes through its theatrical form, offering both audiences and performers a temporary escape from reality.
Garcia, who finds solace in his work, has enjoyed consistent success as a director in Canada since his move in 2020. He’s thrilled to be joining the prestigious Stratford Festival in Ontario next year, and this year, he’s eagerly anticipating directing ‘Request sa Radyo.’
He’s excited to collaborate with both Salonga, a long-time creative partner, and De Leon, whom he admires for her talent. He emphasizes the individual approaches each actress brings to the role, creating two unique performances. The play’s themes of isolation and community resonate deeply with Garcia, particularly in light of his experience with Atlantis Productions.
The company’s 21-year journey has seen the production of over 60 plays and musicals, many of which were international premieres. Garcia is grateful for the loyalty of Manila audiences and is thrilled to reconnect with them by introducing them to ‘Request sa Radyo.’ He believes the play’s non-traditional approach will be a welcome addition to the Manila theater scene, showcasing the limitless possibilities of the art form.
