Mumbai Police made a significant arrest in their ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking, apprehending Danish Merchant, alias Danish Chikna, a known associate of the notorious underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. Chikna’s arrest, made on Friday, follows a month-long investigation triggered by the seizure of drugs in the Marine Lines area. The operation underscores the police’s determination to dismantle drug networks in Mumbai’s underworld. Chikna’s arrest took place alongside his associate, Kader Gulam Sheikh. The arrests are the culmination of a chain of events that began with the apprehension of Mohammed Ashikur Sahidur Rahman and Rehan Shakeel Ansari. Rahman’s arrest on November 8th led to the recovery of 144 grams of narcotics. His subsequent confession implicated Ansari, resulting in the seizure of an additional 55 grams of drugs. Ansari, in turn, pointed the authorities towards Danish Merchant and Qadir Fanta. After weeks of surveillance and investigation, police successfully apprehended Merchant and Fanta in the Dongri area of Mumbai. Both confessed to their roles in the drug ring. This is not Chikna’s first brush with the law; in 2021, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested him for possessing 200 grams of hashish, highlighting his long-standing involvement in drug-related activities. The NCB investigation at that time, which focused on a Mumbai drug lab, implicated Chikna alongside other individuals linked to Dawood Ibrahim’s criminal network. The investigation led him to flee to Rajasthan before being apprehended again. His arrest is another significant blow to Dawood Ibrahim’s operations. The current arrest also revealed Chikna’s alleged role in managing Ibrahim’s drug network in Dongri.
