Delhi NCR Weather Disrupts Travel Amidst Air Quality Concerns
On Wednesday evening, light rain provided some relief to Delhi-NCR after a day of thick fog significantly impacted air travel and rail services. Over 100 flights and 26 trains faced disruptions due to reduced visibility caused by the dense fog. The rainfall, while improving air quality, initially caused a deterioration in air quality before improving it.
IMD Forecasts and Air Quality
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted rainfall on January 15 and 16, anticipating an improvement in air quality. However, they also warned of continued dense fog on January 16, potentially causing further disruptions to transportation. The IMD advised caution for travelers and drivers during foggy conditions.
Temperature Fluctuations and GRAP Stage IV Curbs
The minimum and maximum temperatures in Delhi are expected to be around 10 and 17 degrees Celsius on Thursday, respectively. A further increase in chill is anticipated for Friday. The air quality index (AQI) experienced a sharp increase, reaching 396 on Wednesday evening due to calm winds and foggy conditions. This surge triggered the reinstatement of GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan) Stage IV curbs in Delhi-NCR. These curbs, usually implemented when the AQI exceeds 450 and reaches the 'severe plus' category, were temporarily lifted over the weekend due to improved air quality resulting from previous rainfall. Central Pollution Control Board data placed Delhi and Ghaziabad in the “very poor” AQI category, while Greater Noida and Gurugram reported “poor” AQI. Meteorological experts predict a potential AQI exceeding 400.
Impact on Transportation and Citizen Response
The combination of fog and rain significantly impacted the region's transportation infrastructure. Numerous videos showcasing the rainy weather conditions circulated on social media. The return of GRAP Stage IV curbs highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the region in managing its air quality. The situation underscores the need for proactive measures to reduce pollution and mitigate the impact of adverse weather events on daily life.
Looking Ahead: Continued Monitoring and Mitigation
The situation continues to be closely monitored by meteorological agencies and pollution control boards. As the weather patterns and air quality evolve, residents and visitors should remain updated on official forecasts and advisories. Collaboration among government agencies, citizens, and industries is crucial in addressing the recurring challenges of air pollution in Delhi-NCR. Effective long-term strategies are crucial to improve overall air quality and reduce vulnerability to disruptions caused by weather-related events.
