Delhi Polls: Tight Security, High Stakes

Delhi on High Alert for Assembly Polls

Delhi is on high alert for the assembly polls today, with over 30,000 police personnel and 220 companies of paramilitary forces deployed across the national capital to ensure peaceful elections. Over 1.56 crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots from 7 am onwards at 13,766 polling stations in all 70 Assembly constituencies. The fate of 699 candidates hangs in the balance in this high-stakes election.

Security Tightened Across the Capital

Nearly 3,000 polling booths have been identified as sensitive, prompting special security arrangements. These include drone surveillance, Quick Reaction Teams, Striking Teams, and the deployment of one company of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel at each sensitive location. This robust security presence aims to maintain law and order and ensure a smooth election process.

Delhi Police Committed to Free and Fair Elections

Special Commissioner of Police (SPNO Delhi Assembly Elections) Devesh Chandra Srivastva reaffirmed the Delhi Police’s commitment to ensuring free, fair, and peaceful elections. He stated that pre-poll arrangements are complete and senior police staff are on the ground overseeing the security measures. The deployment includes 220 companies of paramilitary forces—150 from CAPF and 70 from 10 different states—along with over 30,000 police personnel, 9,000 Home Guards, and all senior police officers of Delhi Police. All 65 border points that Delhi shares with Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have been sealed, and heavy security deployment is in place.

From January 7 to February 3, the Delhi Police registered 1,076 cases of alleged Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violations, leading to the arrest or detention of 34,250 individuals. The police also confiscated 469 illegal firearms and 513 cartridges, arresting 491 people under the Arms Act. Additionally, 1,10,093 liters of liquor were seized, resulting in 1,381 arrests.
