IMD Predicts Heavy Snow, Rain in Northwest India Starting January 4th, 2025

India Braces for January Snow and Rain: IMD Forecasts Western Disturbance Impact

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory predicting significant weather changes across Northwest India starting January 4th, 2025. A western disturbance, originating as a cyclonic circulation over eastern Afghanistan, is expected to bring widespread rainfall and snowfall to the region.

Western Himalayas: Snowfall Alert

From January 1st to 3rd, light isolated to scattered rainfall and snowfall is anticipated in the Western Himalayan region. However, this will intensify from January 4th to 6th, with heavier snowfall expected in isolated areas, particularly impacting Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on January 5th. Residents should prepare for potential travel disruptions and hazardous conditions.

Northwest India Plains: Rain Expected

The plains of Northwest India can expect light to moderate rainfall in isolated areas between January 4th and 6th. While not as intense as the snowfall in the Himalayan region, this rainfall could still lead to localized flooding and disruptions.

Southern India: Rainfall and Thunderstorms

A separate weather system, a cyclonic circulation over the Equatorial Indian Ocean, is predicted to bring light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, to south Tamil Nadu on December 31st, 2024. This suggests the possibility of localized flooding or power outages in the affected areas.

Cold Wave and Fog Warnings: Prepare for Chilly Conditions

The IMD has issued cold day warnings for isolated pockets of West Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, and East Uttar Pradesh on January 1st, 2025. Dense fog is anticipated during late-night and early-morning hours across several regions, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and parts of eastern and northeastern India until January 5th. Motorists should exercise caution due to reduced visibility.

Additionally, ground frost is likely in isolated pockets of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on January 1st. Farmers should take necessary precautions to protect vulnerable crops.

Fishermen Advised to Stay Onshore

Due to expected adverse weather conditions, a warning has been issued to fishermen advising against venturing into specific areas of the Gulf of Mannar, southwest Bay of Bengal, and surrounding waters between December 31st and January 4th. Similar warnings extend to the Maldives and southern parts of the southeast Arabian Sea on January 3rd and 4th.

Stay Updated and Stay Safe

This forecast provides a general overview. It is important to refer to your local weather updates regularly for region-specific alerts and warnings. By staying informed and prepared, you can minimize any potential risks associated with the expected changes in weather conditions.
