India’s Defence Transformation: From Importer to Global Leader
India is undergoing a major change in its defence sector, moving from being a big importer to a global leader in making defence equipment. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, speaking at Aero India 2025, highlighted this [[transformation]], stating that India’s fighter jets, missile systems, and naval vessels are not just protecting our borders, but also attracting global attention.
From Dependence to Self-Reliance
A decade ago, India relied heavily on imports for around 65-70% of its defence needs. Today, that same percentage is now being manufactured within the country. This shift towards self-reliance is a testament to India’s growing defence capabilities. Mr. Singh proudly announced that India is now exporting defence equipment, from small artillery to advanced missile systems like Brahmos and Akash, strengthening global partnerships.
The Rise of Indigenous Defence Production
India’s defence industry now boasts 16 Defence Public Sector Undertakings, 430 licensed companies, and approximately 16,000 MSMEs. The private sector plays a key role, contributing 21% to the total defence production. The government is committed to supporting the private sector’s involvement, ensuring a level playing field for all stakeholders.
Aero India 2025: A Showcase of India’s Defence Prowess
Aero India 2025 witnessed immense energy and enthusiasm from Indian and international participants. The event showcased India’s advancements in aerospace technology and defence innovation. More than 500 delegates from 84 countries attended, including Defence Ministers and service chiefs. A record-breaking 931 exhibitors participated, further highlighting the growing interest in India’s defence sector. Fifty eight Original Equipment Manufacturers and 115 global CEOs marked their presence. The event also included public viewing days, giving everyone a chance to witness the impressive aero show. The Defence Minister emphasised that India’s armed forces have fully embraced indigenously manufactured defence products, showing great trust in their quality and capabilities.

Aero India 2025 has cemented India’s position as a key player in the global defence market. The success of Aero India 2025 and the continued growth of indigenous defence production signal a bright future for India’s defence sector.
