India is set to make history as former shooter Raja Randhir Singh is poised to become the first Indian to lead the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). This historic moment will take place at the OCA’s 44th General Assembly, scheduled for Sunday at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. Singh’s appointment was solidified earlier this year when he emerged as the sole candidate for the presidency and was unanimously elected by OCA representatives.
Singh’s journey with the OCA is a testament to his dedication to the organization. He served as the Secretary General from 1991 to 2015, before assuming the role of Life Vice President, a position he held until 2021. Following this, he was appointed as the Acting President of the body, paving the way for his current historic ascension.
Beyond his OCA roles, Singh has also held a prominent position within the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He served as a member from 2001 to 2014 and continues to be an honorary member of the global body. His sporting legacy extends beyond administrative roles, as he participated in four editions of the Asian Games between 1978 and 1994, securing two individual medals and one team medal. He further showcased his skills at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Canada.
With his vast experience and dedication to the Olympic movement, Singh’s leadership is expected to play a significant role in shaping the future of the OCA and promoting the development of sports across Asia.
