Monster Hunter Wilds PC Requirements Spark Controversy Over Frame Generation

Capcom has unveiled the PC requirements for their upcoming title, Monster Hunter Wilds, and the reception has been less than enthusiastic. While the overall specs aren’t overly demanding, requiring a mid-range CPU, 16GB of RAM, and 140GB of SSD space, it’s the graphics card requirements that have sparked controversy.

The recommended specs list the RTX 2070 Super, RTX 4060, or RX 6700 XT as options for achieving 60 frames per second (fps) at 1080p resolution with medium graphics settings. However, the catch is that this assumes frame generation is enabled. This detail has ignited widespread dissatisfaction amongst the gaming community.

On Reddit forums like r/Nvidia and r/MonsterHunter, users have voiced their concerns, with many expressing surprise and frustration that frame generation is even listed as a performance target.

Frame generation technology, like DLSS 3 and FSR 3, can introduce latency, leading to a disconnect between the visual smoothness and the responsiveness of gameplay, especially at lower base frame rates.

This is because frame generation relies on interpolating frames by comparing two rendered frames and guessing what lies in between. At lower base frame rates like 30fps, this interpolation process can lead to noticeable visual artifacts due to the larger gaps between rendered frames.

The fact that Monster Hunter Wilds recommends frame generation to reach 60fps on medium settings at 1080p for powerful GPUs like the RTX 4060 and RX 6700 XT has further fueled the debate. Some believe Capcom is erring on the side of caution after the disastrous PC release of Dragon’s Dogma 2.

We’ll have to wait until Monster Hunter Wilds launches on February 28, 2025, to see if Capcom’s reliance on frame generation will ultimately affect the overall gameplay experience and whether the controversy surrounding these requirements is justified.
