A significant vegetation clearance project is set to commence on the Borders Railway, covering a 30-mile stretch between Newcraighall and Tweedbank. This initiative, led by Network Rail Scotland, will take place from September 2, 2024, to March 31, 2025, aiming to ensure the safe and reliable operation of train services.
The project focuses on managing trees within falling distance of the track and clearing a three-meter strip of woody material from the outer rail to the boundary. This proactive measure is crucial to prevent potential hazards that could disrupt train services, especially during adverse weather conditions.
Alongside tree management, the project will involve treating noxious and invasive non-native weeds within the railway corridor. This comprehensive approach safeguards the railway’s operational integrity while contributing to the overall health of the surrounding environment.

Heritage, landscape, and specimen trees have also been carefully assessed and will be preserved wherever it is safe to do so, demonstrating Network Rail’s commitment to balancing safety with environmental stewardship.
While much of the work is scheduled to take place during the night for safety reasons, Network Rail is committed to minimizing the impact on local communities. “Elements of this work are unavoidably at night for safety reasons; however, the teams are always mindful of the impact their work may have and will do what they can to minimize this. We want to thank neighbors in advance for their patience and understanding while the work is carried out,” added McAllister.
Residents living closest to the railway line have been informed about the project via letter, which includes a section addressing frequently asked questions and concerns. This proactive communication aims to keep the community well-informed and reassured during the project’s duration.
