Ontario International Airport (ONT) continued its impressive growth trajectory in July 2024, recording another record month for passenger volume. The airport welcomed 666,322 travelers, marking a 14.4% increase compared to July 2023. This record-breaking number surpasses the previous high set in 2016, when the airport transitioned to local ownership. It also inches closer to the all-time record of 693,000 passengers set in August 2007.
The surge in passenger numbers is attributed to a strong increase in both domestic and international travel. Domestic passenger volume rose by 16.7% in July 2024, with over 629,000 travelers passing through ONT. International passenger numbers also saw a notable increase, reaching 37,218, despite a slight decrease of 14.5% compared to July 2023.
Over the first seven months of 2024, ONT has welcomed nearly 4 million passengers, representing a 11.6% increase from the same period in 2023. This includes 3.7 million domestic travelers and 270,000 international passengers, demonstrating a continued growth trend in both segments.
Atif Elkadi, CEO of the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA), attributed the consistent growth to the airport’s popularity among airlines and travelers. He highlighted the airport’s strategic location in the Inland Empire, a region experiencing significant population growth, and its commitment to offering a high-quality travel experience. He emphasized the airport’s world-class facilities, attractive retail and dining options, and its reputation for a hassle-free customer experience.
In addition to passenger growth, ONT also experienced a significant increase in commercial freight volume. July 2024 saw an 11.8% increase in freight shipments, reaching over 59,000 tons. Year-to-date, freight volume grew by nearly 4%, totaling over 406,500 tons. This demonstrates ONT’s position as a vital hub for shipping and cargo operations.
These positive trends solidify ONT’s reputation as a thriving and popular travel destination, attracting passengers and airlines alike. The airport’s continued success reflects its commitment to offering a high-quality travel experience and its strategic location in a growing region.
