Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar have expressed their grief over the untimely demise of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister H. Amir-Abdollahian in a helicopter crash on Sunday.
In a message posted on social media, PM Modi stated, “Deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic demise of Dr. Seyed Ebrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. His contribution to strengthening India-Iran bilateral relationship will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Iran. India stands with Iran in this time of sorrow.”
EAM Jaishankar also shared his condolences, saying, “Deeply shocked to hear of the passing away of Iran’s President Dr Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister H. Amir-Abdollahian in the helicopter crash. Recall my many meetings with them, most recently in January 2024. Our condolences to their families. We stand with the people of Iran at the time of this tragedy.”
The sudden demise of President Raisi and Foreign Minister Abdollahian has come as a shock to the international community. The leaders were known for their efforts in strengthening diplomatic ties and promoting peace and stability in the region.
India and Iran share close cultural, historical, and economic ties. The two countries have been working together on several projects, including the development of the Chabahar port and the International North-South Transport Corridor.
