The event, closely associated with The HALO Trust, a humanitarian organization dedicated to removing landmines and remnants of war, held special significance for the Duke of Sussex.
“As you know, The HALO Trust work in Angola meant a great deal to my mother. Carrying on her legacy is a responsibility that I take incredibly seriously,” Prince Harry stated, his voice filled with emotion. The HALO Trust gained global recognition in 1997 when Princess Diana walked through an active minefield in Angola, highlighting the organization’s crucial work in over 30 countries.
Prince Harry’s dedication to The HALO Trust extends beyond his latest public engagement. In 2019, he embarked on a memorable journey retracing Princess Diana’s footsteps in Angola. He visited the once-hazardous minefield that had transformed into a thriving community, complete with schools and businesses. This site, now marked by The Diana Tree, where the princess was famously photographed, stands as a testament to the organization’s impact.
Reflecting on his 2019 trip to Angola, Prince Harry acknowledged the profound changes in his life and the world since then. “Much has changed in my life and the world since 2019 when I first visited,” he remarked. “In those five years, I’ve become a father for the second time.”
Prince Harry emphasized the urgent need to continue clearing landmines, emphasizing their devastating impact. “While you don’t need children to have a stake in the future of our planet, I do know that my mother would have been horrified that anyone’s children or grandchildren would live in a world still infested with mines.” He reiterated his commitment to the cause by video chatting with The HALO Trust team working in Ukraine during the Russian invasion in March 2022.
