Shashi Tharoor on US Deporting Illegal Indian Immigrants

Shashi Tharoor’s Take on Deportation of Indian Immigrants from US

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor addressed the recent news of the US sending back Indian immigrants without proper papers. He pointed out that this isn’t new and has happened before. He reminded everyone that even before Donald Trump became president again, during Joe Biden’s time in office, over 1,100 Indians were sent back. American officials believe there are around 7,25,000 Indians who could be sent back because they don’t have the right papers.

India’s Obligation to Accept Deported Citizens

Tharoor stressed that if these people are Indian citizens, India must take them back. There’s no question about it. He added that people are welcome to go to America legally – with a proper visa, for a job, as a tourist, or to study. But if someone stays without the right papers, they have to follow American laws.

Comparison with Other Countries

Tharoor made a simple point: If India finds someone from another country, say [[Bangladesh]], living and working in India without permission, wouldn’t they be sent back? He used Home Minister Amit Shah as an example, asking if he wouldn’t take action in such a case. This was to highlight that every country has the right to enforce its immigration laws.

Trump’s Conversation with PM Modi and US Stance on Illegal Immigration

Last month, Trump said he talked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about this issue. Modi reportedly assured Trump that India would do the right thing and take back its citizens who are in the US illegally. Reports say that both countries have identified about 18,000 Indian immigrants who entered the US illegally. India’s Ministry of External Affairs said it’s against illegal immigration because it can be connected to crime. They confirmed they will take back any Indian nationals who are staying in other countries without the right papers, as long as the required documents are given to confirm their Indian citizenship. An American Embassy spokesperson in New Delhi said the US is working hard to control its borders, making immigration laws stricter, and sending back anyone who’s there illegally.

Trump’s Tough Stand and Military Aircraft Use

Sending back these immigrants is part of Trump’s tough approach to illegal immigration. He has openly talked about using military aircraft to send people back to their home countries. This has happened before, with immigrants being flown back to countries like Guatemala, Peru, and Honduras. The latest deportation of Indian citizens fits this pattern. The timing is notable, as it comes shortly before PM Modi’s likely visit to the US later this month. This will be his first visit to the US since Trump returned to the White House. The issue of illegal immigration is likely to be a key point of discussion between the two leaders during this visit. These latest developments underscore the ongoing challenges related to global immigration and the complex relationship between countries as they navigate these issues.
