President Biden Grants Clemency to Nonviolent Drug Offenders

President Biden has issued pardons to 11 individuals and commuted the sentences of five others convicted of nonviolent drug offenses. The move aligns with Biden’s commitment to addressing racial disparities in sentencing, as many of those pardoned received disproportionately long sentences. Notably, no nonviolent cannabis prisoners were among the recipients of Biden’s clemency. Despite previous promises to release individuals imprisoned for marijuana possession, thousands remain incarcerated, prompting criticism from organizations like the Last Prisoner Project.
