On Friday, September 6, 2024, a Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul to Taipei experienced severe turbulence just before landing at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport. According to Yahya Üstün, the airline’s Press Counselor, Flight TK24, departing from Istanbul’s Atatürk International Airport, encountered unexpected turbulence approximately two hours away from its destination. This turbulence caused passengers and crew members to be violently jostled, resulting in injuries.
Reports indicate that four passengers and two cabin crew members sustained injuries, mostly minor in nature. However, two passengers decided to seek further medical attention at a hospital after initial assessments on board.
Üstün issued a statement saying, “The passengers and crew of TK24 were subjected to unexpected turbulence, causing several minor injuries. Thankfully, the aircraft landed safely and medical support was immediately provided. We recognize the distress caused to our passengers and apologize for any inconvenience. The safety and comfort of our passengers remain our utmost priority.”
Following the turbulence, the aircraft landed safely at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport, where emergency services were on standby. Passengers unable to continue their journeys were provided with accommodations and alternative travel arrangements.
Turkish Airlines is actively working with authorities to investigate the cause of the turbulence and enhance safety measures for future flights. The airline has committed to fully supporting the injured passengers and crew, covering all medical costs and providing necessary assistance.
