Uefa Considers Return to 26-Man Squads, Easing Southgate’s Selection Headaches

UEFA’s potential return to expanded squads for Euro 2024 could ease England manager Gareth Southgate’s selection headaches, offering opportunities to players who have struggled with injuries or loss of form.

One of the key beneficiaries could be Luke Shaw, a regular fixture in England’s recent tournaments. Despite a difficult season for Manchester United, Shaw is expected to return in time to feature for England before the end of the season. With Southgate considering Shaw as one of the best left-backs in the world, an enlarged squad could secure his place.

Another player who could benefit is Chelsea’s Reece James. While England has several options at right-back, James’s experience and leadership could make him a valuable addition to a 26-man squad. However, a hamstring issue has kept him out of action, and his availability will depend on his recovery.

Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish, both previously key players for England, have faced competition in recent months. However, an expanded squad could provide them with a chance to prove their worth. Sterling has struggled for form at Chelsea, while Grealish has recently returned to Manchester City’s starting lineup.

Mason Mount is another player who could benefit from an expanded squad. A Chelsea player when he last represented England, Mount has since moved to Manchester United but has endured a frustrating first season at Old Trafford. Despite this, Southgate has indicated that Mount remains in his plans.

Finally, Ollie Watkins could also be in contention for a spot in an expanded squad. The Aston Villa frontman is vying with Brentford’s Ivan Toney for the backup striker role behind Harry Kane. Southgate has acknowledged the challenge of selecting three out-and-out strikers in a 23-man squad, so an increased squad size could allow him to include another specialist.
