The pristine mountains and spiritual aura of Uttarakhand, often called ‘Devbhoomi’ (land of gods), have been attracting a growing influx of tourists. While this economic boon is welcomed, it has also brought with it a pressing issue: the rise of irresponsible tourist behavior. Locals and tourism stakeholders are voicing concerns over incidents of noise pollution, littering, reckless driving, and disrespect for local customs, raising alarm bells about the sustainability of tourism in the region.

Reports of tourists blasting loud music, discarding liquor bottles into gorges, and honking incessantly are commonplace. This disregard for local customs and the environment has led to tension between visitors and the local community. A recent incident, shared by a homestay owner in Nainital on social media, highlighted the extent of the problem. A group of tourists from the National Capital Region (NCR) left their accommodations in a state of disarray, damaging property and displaying a blatant lack of respect for the space.

The issue has garnered attention from prominent figures. A well-known actor and longtime resident of Landour Cantonment wrote to the Cantonment CEO, urging for stricter measures to curb unruly behavior. He proposed solutions like implementing vehicle monitoring systems during late-night hours at Char Dukan and installing CCTV cameras at key guard stations to enhance safety and oversight. These measures are seen as crucial in addressing the escalating problem of reckless driving, which has not only affected local communities but also posed risks to sacred pilgrimage routes like the Char Dham yatra, where accidents linked to such behavior have been reported.

Businessman Visheshwar Maithani, who is currently opening a hotel in Badrinath, echoed the widespread concern. He noted the heightened scrutiny on vehicles from the NCR, highlighting the awareness of the issue. Maithani also pointed out that Rishikesh is facing even more significant challenges, with hoteliers expressing their anxieties about the situation. He emphasized the importance of responsible tourism, reminding visitors that Uttarakhand, with its spiritual significance, deserves to be treated with utmost respect and care.

While some homestay and hotel owners remain silent to protect their business interests, Maithani believes it’s time for tourists to acknowledge their responsibilities when visiting this sacred land. Ajay Bhatt, a hotelier in Auli and a homestay owner in Joshimath, shared his perspective on the issue. He acknowledged the increase in irresponsible tourist behavior and the added burden it placed on homestay operators. Bhatt, who prioritizes safety and reliability, conducts thorough background checks before confirming bookings to ensure guests align with the values of the region. This reflects a growing awareness among local hospitality providers about the need to safeguard their businesses and the environment from the negative impacts of tourism.
