James Howells, a name forever etched in the history books for accidentally discarding a hard drive containing Bitcoin, is making a bold move to reclaim his lost fortune. The hard drive, which holds approximately 8,000 units of Bitcoin now worth over half a billion dollars, was unintentionally thrown away in 2013 while Howells was cleaning his office.
In a last-ditch effort to retrieve his lost treasure, Howells, a software engineer based in Wales, has filed a lawsuit against the Newport City Council. He is seeking roughly 495.31 million British pounds, or approximately $647 million, in damages for the council’s repeated denial of his request to excavate the landfill where the hard drive rests.
Howells clarified that the lawsuit is a strategic maneuver to convince the council to allow an excavation, emphasizing that it’s not a reflection of the actual situation. To demonstrate his commitment, he has assembled a team of specialists to carry out the excavation at no cost to the council. He has also proposed a generous deal, offering the council 10% of the recovered coins’ value. The case is scheduled for a hearing in December.
Newport Council, however, has dismissed the lawsuit as “weak” and voiced concerns regarding the potential environmental impact of the proposed excavation.
