Taiwan’s Hualien hit by over 200 aftershocks, minor damage reported

Taiwan’s eastern Hualien county, which was struck by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake on April 3, has experienced more than 200 aftershocks since Monday afternoon. The aftershocks, which ranged in magnitude from 4.3 to 6.3, have caused minor damage to buildings but no casualties have been reported. The Central Weather Administration said the aftershocks are a “concentrated release of energy” and that more could be expected, although perhaps not as strong. Residents in Hualien have been advised to be prepared for further disruption as heavy rain is predicted for the region this week.

Taiwan Hit by Cluster of Earthquakes, Strongest Measuring 6.1

A cluster of earthquakes struck Taiwan on Tuesday, with the strongest registering a magnitude of 6.1. While no casualties were reported, damage was sustained to two multi-story buildings previously evacuated after a 7.4 magnitude quake earlier in April, which claimed 13 lives and injured over 1,000. Taiwan, prone to earthquakes, has implemented strict building codes and public education campaigns to mitigate the impact on its 23 million residents.
