Taiwan Struck by 6.0 Magnitude Earthquake after Tremors on Monday Night

Taiwan was struck by a 6.0 magnitude earthquake on Monday night, the latest in a series of tremors that have been shaking the island’s east coast since the beginning of the week. The quake was centered in the rural eastern county of Hualien, where a 7.2 magnitude earthquake on April 3 killed at least 14 people. The fire department in Hualien reported that a hotel that had already been damaged in the April 3 quake was now leaning slightly on its side, but there were no reports of any casualties from the latest temblor.

Taiwan is located near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes. In 2016, more than 100 people were killed in a quake in southern Taiwan, while a 7.3 magnitude quake in 1999 killed more than 2,000 people.
