10 Injured in Shooting Incident at Water Park Near Detroit
A shooting incident at a city-run water park near Detroit left 10 people injured on Saturday. The incident occurred in the suburbs of Rochester Hills while families were frolicking in the water to beat the heat.
Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard reported that the incident occurred at approximately 5:00 pm (local time) when a man exited a vehicle in front of the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad park and began firing multiple shots from a 9mm semiautomatic Glock.
Authorities recovered a handgun and three empty magazines at the scene and believe the suspect fired approximately 28 times, reloading multiple times. The suspect is believed to have fled the scene and was reportedly hiding in a nearby home.
The authorities urged people to avoid the area while the investigation is ongoing. The conditions of the victims remain unclear at this time.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her condolences and dismay over the incident on Twitter, stating, “I am heartbroken to learn about the shooting in Rochester Hills. We are monitoring the situation as updates continue to come in, and are in touch with local officials.”
The shooting comes less than a year after the Oxford High School shooting in the same county, where four students were killed and six others were injured. The Oxford shooting was perpetrated by a 15-year-old student named Ethan Crumbley.
