World Tourism Day, celebrated on September 27th, 2024, saw the unveiling of 100 Travel Innovations, a collection of inspiring stories from 100 locations across the globe. These stories highlight transformative initiatives that are making a positive impact on the world by addressing environmental, economic, and social challenges.
Rotorua, New Zealand, is prominently featured in this initiative, as the birthplace of tourism in the country. RotoruaNZ chief executive, Andrew Wilson, emphasizes the city’s responsibility to lead by example in environmental stewardship. He encourages visitors to support local businesses dedicated to restoring New Zealand’s native flora and fauna, highlighting the crucial role of responsible tourism in preserving the country’s natural heritage.
Rotorua’s unique geothermal landscapes, rich Māori cultural heritage, and thriving visitor economy make it a prime example of how tourism can positively impact biodiversity, enhance climate resilience, preserve cultural traditions, and foster community well-being. The 100 Travel Innovations initiative showcases a diverse range of projects addressing key areas such as biodiversity, climate resilience, cultural preservation, community prosperity, equality, modernization, responsible tourism, and job creation. This initiative is designed to inspire travelers and encourage positive change both within the travel industry and in communities worldwide.
Among the featured innovations is Rotorua’s successful Predator Free Okere Falls initiative. Started over a decade ago by Sam Sutton, the owner-operator of Rotorua Rafting and Rotorua Ziplines, the initiative has evolved into a community-driven project. Guided by Te Mauri o Okere Awa Charitable Trust, the project aims to eradicate pests from local backyards and reserves by 2025, demonstrating how collective community efforts can contribute to broader environmental goals.

Working closely with Todd Montgomery, professor at Oregon State University and director of the Sustainable Tourism Lab, the editorial team has brought together a diverse range of initiatives that offer a glimpse into the future of travel, one that is more sustainable, responsible, and equitable for all.
