The popular prequel series to ‘Yellowstone,’ ‘1923,’ has captivated audiences since its debut in 2022, and fans are eagerly anticipating the return of the Dutton family’s story for a second season.
While filming has yet to begin for ‘1923’ season 2, several details have been revealed about the upcoming season. Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, who portray Jacob and Cara Dutton, the central couple of the series, have confirmed their return. Additionally, the following actors will reprise their roles: Sebastian Roché as Father Renaud, Darren Mann as Jack Dutton, Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth Strafford, Aminah Nieves as Teonna Rainwater, Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton, Robert Patrick as Sheriff William McDowell, Jerome Flynn as Banner Creighton, and Timothy Dalton as Donald Whitfield.
A new face will join the cast in season 2. Jennifer Carpenter is set to play Mamie Fossett, a skilled U.S. Deputy Marshall described as “a highly capable U.S. Deputy Marshall who serves warrants and makes arrests with confidence ahead of her time.” Carpenter’s most notable roles include Debra Morgan in Showtime’s ‘Dexter’ and Emily Rose in ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose.’
Tragically, Cole Brings Plenty, who portrayed Pete Plenty Clouds in season 1, passed away in April 2024. It is currently unknown if the role will be recast for season 2.
Regarding the storyline, the first season concluded with the Duttons facing a financial crisis due to Donald Whitfield’s payment of their land taxes. If they cannot repay Whitfield by the end of the year, they will lose everything. This impending conflict is likely to be a primary plotline in season 2.
While Paramount+ has not formally announced when filming will begin, Brandon Sklenar, who plays Spencer Dutton, indicated that production is set to commence later this year.
In terms of the series’ future, Taylor Sheridan, the co-creator of ‘Yellowstone’ and the writer and director of ‘1923,’ has stated that he only intends to produce eight more episodes. This would conclude the current chapter of the Dutton family saga.
A sequel miniseries, titled ‘1944,’ was announced in February 2023. This series is set during World War II and will presumably follow the Dutton family’s involvement in the conflict.
As for the release date of ‘1923’ season 2, neither Sheridan nor Paramount+ has provided any concrete information. With the final episodes of ‘Yellowstone’ season 5 slated to be filmed this spring, it is possible that ‘1923’ season 2 could premiere before them, potentially sometime in late 2024 or early 2025. However, it is also possible that Paramount+ might delay the release until after ‘Yellowstone’ season 5 part 2 airs, which could push the premiere into 2025.
