The 2024 World Indigenous Tourism Summit (WITS), hosted by the World Indigenous Tourism Alliance (WINTA), kicked off at the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center, drawing the attention of the global tourism industry.

With the participation of around 600 attendees from 27 countries and regions, this year’s summit reached a new milestone in both attendance and international representation, reflecting its growing global influence. Several high-ranking Taiwanese officials, including Vice Premier Cheng Wen-tsan, Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai, and Minister of the Council of Indigenous Peoples Icyang Parod, graced the event with their presence.

Placing emphasis on the theme ‘Sustainable Tourism of Culture and Ecology’, the summit aligns with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and the principles of responsible tourism. Throughout the conference, industry experts, government officials, and academic leaders engaged in in-depth discussions on how to develop local tourism while preserving cultural heritage and natural ecosystems. They explored how tourism activities can contribute to economic benefits, supporting sustainable development and community building for Indigenous Peoples.

Vice Premier Cheng Wen-tsan, in his opening remarks, highlighted Taiwan’s rich indigenous heritage, comprising 16 unique communities. He emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the summit and its efforts to encourage international exchange and understanding.

Minister Icyang Parod delivered his speech in the Amis language, showcasing the distinct魅力 of indigenous culture. The simultaneous interpretation provided at the event further enhanced the cultural significance for an international audience. He warmly welcomed attendees, expressing the hope that the summit would not only showcase Taiwan’s indigenous culture but also foster international collaboration for its sustainable development.

The TULU Summit, organized by WINTA, has been instrumental in promoting indigenous-led tourism development since its inception in 2017. The platform serves as a venue for international cultural exchanges and policy dialogues, strengthening global connections and enhancing the visibility of indigenous cultures worldwide.
