Embracer Group is restructuring its operations to create three separate gaming companies: Asmodee, Coffee Stain and Friends, and Middle-earth Enterprises and Friends. Each will operate independently and be listed on the Nasdaq Stockholm.
Asmodee will focus on tabletop games, with over 300 IPs. It will publish titles based on popular franchises like Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings. As part of the restructuring, Asmodee has secured $958 million in financing to reduce debt and leverage.
Coffee Stain and Friends will showcase its strong portfolio of over 200 IPs, including Deep Rock Galactic, Valheim, and Goat Simulator. The company will also focus on free-to-play games, including Cryptic and Star Trek Online.
Middle-earth Enterprises and Friends will primarily manage The Lord of the Rings IP. It will own studios such as 4A Games, Crystal Dynamics, and Eidos-Montreal. The company has a strong lineup of IPs, including Dead Island, Metro, and Tomb Raider.
Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors stated that the move aims to empower each team and provide strategic autonomy. The company believes this will allow them to deliver exceptional gaming experiences.
This restructuring follows recent challenges for Embracer Group, including layoffs and studio closures. It also comes after the collapse of a $2 billion deal with Saudi Arabia-based Savvy Games and the divestiture of Saber Interactive. Despite these challenges, Embracer Group remains committed to supporting entrepreneurs and creators in the long term.
