On Saturday, April 20th, playfulness reigned in the River Thames as dolphins made a splash near Twickenham Bridge. This uncommon spectacle thrilled Londoners accustomed to spotting foxes, squirrels, and pigeons.
The excitement was palpable on social media, with videos capturing the dolphins’ frolics. However, amidst the joy, concerns arose regarding the dolphins’ well-being due to the Thames’ notorious pollution, particularly its elevated E-coli levels.
The Metropolitan Police Service’s Marine Unit acknowledged the sightings and assured the public that relevant agencies had been notified.
While dolphin sightings in the Thames are infrequent, they are not unprecedented. In 2017, another significant sighting occurred, underscoring the importance of maintaining water quality for the health of marine life.
