High Winds Prompt Advisories in Northern US, Impeding Driving
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued wind advisories for seven states in the northern U.S., including Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana, as a cold front moves through the northern Plains on Monday.
The strongest winds are expected in Rapid City, South Dakota, with gusts reaching up to 55 miles per hour. Most areas can anticipate wind speeds between 20 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts up to 40 or 50 miles per hour.
The NWS warns that the wind could be so severe that motorists may lose control of their vehicles. “Sudden wind gusts can cause drivers to lose control, especially in lightweight or high-profile vehicles. Strong winds can cause blowing dust, reduced visibility, and flying debris,” the NWS warned.
Meteorologists urge extra caution for drivers, especially those operating high-profile vehicles. The warnings also extend to securing loose objects, as the wind could send them flying.
In addition to the wind advisories, the NWS Rapid City office has issued a warning about elevated fire conditions due to warm temperatures, low humidity, and gusty winds.
The strong winds are expected to last throughout Monday, with the strongest gusts occurring in the morning and evening. Other parts of the nation, including the Midwest, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland, are experiencing frost and freeze warnings due to the cold front.
