Huw Edwards, a prominent BBC newsreader, has resigned after four decades of service. His departure follows a nine-month suspension imposed in July 2023 amidst allegations that he had paid a young person for sexually explicit images.
Following the reports, Edwards’ wife disclosed that he had been hospitalized with severe mental health issues. The BBC subsequently suspended him. In a statement released on April 22, the BBC announced Edwards’ resignation, citing medical advice as the reason for his decision.
The statement conveyed, “Huw Edwards has today resigned and left the BBC.” It continued, “After 40 years of service, Huw has explained that his decision was made on the basis of medical advice from his doctors.”
The BBC accepted Edwards’ resignation, believing it would enable all parties to move forward. The Metropolitan Police did not pursue charges against the Welsh reporter, stating that there was no evidence of criminal activity.
Edwards was reportedly the BBC’s highest-paid newsreader, having covered significant global events over the past three decades. These events included the inauguration of Barack Obama, the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and the announcement of Queen Elizabeth II’s death.
Edwards presented the BBC Six O’Clock News from 1994 to 2003, which was then the most-watched news program in the United Kingdom. According to the BBC, Edwards received a salary of £435,000 to £439,000 in the year 2022/23.
The BBC concluded its statement by expressing, “We don’t believe it appropriate to comment further.” The corporation also confirmed that Edwards had not received a severance payment as part of his departure.
