A horrific rally car crash in Sri Lanka has resulted in the tragic loss of seven lives, including an eight-year-old girl. The incident occurred on Sunday during the Fox Hill Supercross race in Diyatalawa, an army base town located about 110 miles east of Colombo. Thousands of spectators had gathered to witness the thrilling event, which involves drivers racing through the town.
The cause of the crash is still being investigated by authorities, but witnesses reported that it happened shortly after another car overturned on the track. Race officials attempted to slow down the other cars by waving yellow lights, but one vehicle veered off course and crashed into spectators on the side of the unguarded track.
The tragic accident claimed the lives of four officials and three others, with 21 individuals sustaining injuries. Three of the injured are reportedly in critical condition and are receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
The race, which was organized by the Sri Lankan army and Sri Lanka Automobile Sports, was immediately suspended after the accident. Police have arrested two drivers in connection with the incident, but their condition and involvement are still under investigation.
Prior to the tragic event, organizers had opened the event to spectators free of charge, resulting in an estimated 100,000 people being present. After visiting the hospital to assess the injured, the Bandarawela Magistrate ordered the two arrested drivers to be remanded until the 30th of this month.
One of the drivers involved in the incident provided a statement to authorities, claiming that his car hit the back of another vehicle and rolled over. He also mentioned that he attempted to exit the car from the other side but observed the two crashed cars rolling some distance away.
The deadly rally car crash has sent shockwaves through the community and raised concerns about safety measures at such events. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further details are expected to be released as they become available.
