Mets Catcher Francisco Álvarez Suffers Thumb Injury, Sidelined for 6-8 Weeks
New York Mets catcher Francisco Álvarez suffered a torn ligament in his left thumb while rounding first base in Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The injury will require surgery and is expected to keep him out for six to eight weeks.
Álvarez said he feels bad and is angry with himself for the injury, which occurred when he slipped and pushed off the ground with his hand while trying to advance to second base.
“My reaction is bad. I’m mad at myself,” Álvarez told reporters, via MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo prior to the Mets’ 10-0 loss to the Dodgers Sunday afternoon. “Because I feel like (they’re) very sad with me.”
After the game, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza didn’t hide his concern for the star catcher’s injury.
“I’m pretty concerned. I’m not going to lie,” Mendoza told reporters. “He was in pain . . . He tried [to stay in the game]. He was taking his time. ‘It’s getting better, it’s getting better.’ Once he got to the dugout, he couldn’t squeeze a glove. That’s when we decided we gotta do something there.”
The Mets appear to be planning to start Omar Narváez and Tomás Nido, who they called up from Triple-A Syracuse after placing Álvarez on the 15-day injured list on Saturday, at catcher.
Kevin Parada, their 2022 first-rounder, started the season in Double-A Binghamton and has started slowly. In 12 games, he’s 7-for-36 (.194 batting average).
