WRC Technical Rule Changes Spark Manufacturer Opposition

The FIA’s proposed technical rule changes for the 2025 and 2026 WRC seasons have encountered significant resistance from manufacturers Toyota, Hyundai, and M-Sport Ford. These manufacturers have collectively expressed their preference for retaining the current Rally1 regulations, which they consider more appropriate for the championship.

The FIA’s proposed changes aim to reduce hybrid power, aerodynamics, and air restrictor size in Rally1 cars, bringing them closer in performance to Rally2 vehicles. The FIA also plans to introduce an upgrade kit for Rally2 cars, potentially impacting the competitiveness of both categories.

Manufacturers, however, have raised concerns about the short timeline and resource costs involved in developing revised Rally1 cars under the proposed changes. They believe that the FIA should prioritize the development of new Rally1 regulations for 2027 and beyond, rather than focusing on intermediate changes for 2025 and 2026.

Responding to the manufacturers’ concerns, the FIA has acknowledged the need for compromise. The FIA aims to reach an agreement with manufacturers by May and present its final decision to teams in June, ahead of the World Motor Sport Council meeting.

The FIA has also clarified its reasons for proposing the rule changes, citing concerns from tire supplier Pirelli, drivers, and Hyundai regarding the continuation of their involvement in the WRC. The FIA believes that the proposed changes address these concerns and will strengthen the championship overall.
