In the wake of the Columbia University tent demonstration that led to over 100 arrests, students at New York University and The New School have set up their own encampments to condemn the war in Gaza.
As of Monday at 6 a.m., dozens of NYU undergraduate and graduate students occupied Gould Plaza outside the Stern School of Business, calling for divestment from Israel and the reversal of disciplinary measures against pro-Palestinian activism. Their signs and tents bore messages such as “deoccupy,” “free Palestine,” and “Jews for anarchy.”
Similarly, about a dozen students at The New School erected an encampment inside the university center building, writing “liberated zone,” “free Palestine,” and “divest from death” on the tents. This demonstration follows the probation of the campus chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine.
The New School has stated that the demonstration was unauthorized but that college officials are in communication with protesters to resolve the situation. The university also plans to launch an investment advisory committee with elected student representatives and has expressed a commitment to supporting peaceful protest.
