Acmetonia Elementary School is implementing SpringMath as a mathematics intervention program for students in grades 1-6. The program was approved by the Allegheny Valley School Board for nearly $7,800 and will be included in the district’s 2024-25 budget.
SpringMath was piloted in the first, third, fifth, and sixth-grade classrooms this year. After reviewing the data, the district decided to keep its core curriculum, Eureka Math, and use SpringMath as an intervention tool for targeted lessons based on students’ needs.
During a fall screening, only 12% of third grade students were at the instructional level for addition and subtraction for numbers between 0 and 20. After the SpringMath interventions, 90% of third graders were at or above mastery.
Similarly, in the first grade, 16% of students were at the instructional level for subtraction 0-5. The winter screening indicated that 52% of the first-grade students were at the instructional level. By the final classwide intervention, 88% of the first-grade class was at mastery level.
SpringMath uses paper and pencil, with an online component for teachers to monitor student progress and provide intervention recommendations. Math intervention was previously left to the teacher’s discretion, but SpringMath provides a structured and data-driven approach. Additionally, leveled materials and extra support are available to accommodate students with different needs.
The implementation of SpringMath at Acmetonia Elementary School is expected to improve math fact fluency and overall math proficiency among students in the targeted grades.
