Social Security, the safety net program for retired Americans, has become a source of frustration for many recipients due to accidental overpayments.
One such recipient, Ellen from Virginia, recently took to Facebook to express her outrage after receiving a $914 overpayment notice. She claimed that this occurred despite her Social Security benefits being reduced to less than $850.
Social Security pays out money to millions of Americans, but occasionally the agency realizes it has overpaid an individual. This can result in a request for repayment.
Ellen is not alone in her struggles with the Social Security Administration (SSA). The agency has overpaid billions of dollars in recent years and is legally required to recover those funds.
Some retirees have received demands for repayment in the thousands of dollars. One woman posted on Facebook about a $4,000 overpayment notice that left her ‘broke.’ Another retiree expressed frustration that the SSA ‘penalizes hard work.’
The situation has become so frustrating for some that one woman lost $111,384 of her benefits due to a little-known rule.
