Damon Tingay, a 30-year-old man with no fixed address, has admitted to a serious sexual offense against a corpse in the mortuary of Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby. The incident occurred in the early hours of March 17 and was initially suspected to be a burglary.
Tingay pleaded guilty to sexual penetration of a corpse and trespass with intent to commit sexual offenses during a hearing at Hull Crown Court on Monday. CCTV footage of the incident was captured, but it will not be shown in a public courtroom. Instead, it may be shown to the judge in private or described in detail by the prosecution.
Judge John Thackray QC ordered a psychiatric report and a probation service assessment to determine the potential danger Tingay poses to the public. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 27.
Humberside Police clarified that the investigation into Tingay is unrelated to the ongoing probe into Legacy Funeral Directors. The force is working with the NHS and the coroner to inform the families of the deceased who were in the mortuary at the time of the incident. Specially trained officers are providing support to the affected families.
