The Vancouver Canucks’ return to the playoffs on Sunday generated an electrifying atmosphere downtown as throngs of fans erupted in a cacophony of noise for the pivotal Game 1. The team responded magnificently, rallying in the third period to secure a thrilling 4-2 victory over the Nashville Predators. This marked the first home playoff game for the Canucks in nine years.
The palpable energy within Rogers Arena was not lost on the players. Forward T.J. Miller expressed his awe, stating, “It was probably one of the more special things I’ve been a part of other than the birth of my children and my wedding. It’s hard not to get choked up when you see that. That literally is everything.”
Beyond the excitement within the arena, the City of Vancouver embraced the occasion by closing Pat Quinn Way adjacent to the venue. A lively atmosphere prevailed as marching bands and a stage entertained ticketholders before the game.
For those unable to secure tickets, the Canucks organized watch parties within Rogers Arena, charging a modest admission fee of $15. After the exhilarating victory, fans in Surrey took to the streets at Scott Road and 72nd Avenue, celebrating with honking horns and waving flags.
The City of Delta also hosted its first outdoor watch party at Social Heart Plaza, offering food trucks, beverages, and amenities from the nearby recreation center. According to Councillor Rod Binder, “When we go deep, we have lots of room and capacity, and this is going to be a really big family event and it’s going to be really fun to celebrate our team.”
To extend the celebration throughout the week, SkyTrain riders will have the unique experience of hearing the voice of Canucks announcer Al Murdoch making the announcements ahead of playoff games. Murdoch, the first guest voice on transit since Seth Rogan in 2018, will be broadcasting from select stations, including the Stadium-Chinatown station adjacent to Rogers Arena.
