Residents’ associations across the city are demanding the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) prohibit youth from playing cricket in public parks. The move is aimed at promoting safety for walkers, who have suffered injuries due to the game.
In Anna Nagar, Councillor T.V. Shemmozhi said display boards will be erected in ward 104 this week, announcing the ban on cricket in parks. He cited multiple incidents of senior citizens sustaining bruises after being hit by cricket balls.
In Ambattur, Councillor J. John raised concerns about the lack of playgrounds in ward 84. He said only one playground and two parks are available, leading to cricket games being played in parks and resulting in walkers being injured.
John also highlighted the encroachment of a waterbody by a private landowner and the need for the GCC to create more playgrounds. Residents have demanded a playground in ward 75, and the GCC has assured its construction after the poll code is lifted.
This summer, local youth are facing a shortage of playing spaces, and residents expect the GCC to initiate work on the promised playground after the lifting of the poll code.
