In the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, the race for the Purple Cap, awarded to the player with the most wickets, is intensifying.
Despite going wicketless during Mumbai Indians’ defeat against Rajasthan Royals on Monday, Jasprit Bumrah continues to hold a slender lead with 13 scalps to his name. Joining him at 13 wickets is Yuzvendra Chahal, who reached the milestone of 200 IPL wickets during the match.
Hot on their heels is Harshal Patel, also with 13 wickets. Mumbai Indians’ Gerald Coetzee and Punjab Kings’ stand-in captain Sam Curran round out the top five, both with 11 wickets.
Every IPL season, a great deal of attention is given to the players who emerge as the leading wicket-takers, earning the coveted Purple Cap. These players often go on to represent their national teams in major tournaments like the T20 World Cup.
In the previous IPL 2023 season, Gujarat Titans’ Mohammed Shami won the Purple Cap with 28 wickets in 17 matches. He was followed by teammates Mohit Sharma (27 wickets in 14 matches), Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan (27 wickets in 17 matches), and Mumbai Indians’ Piyush Chawla (22 wickets in 16 games).
